Southwell Civic Society is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation engaged in actively promoting high standards of planning and architecture in and around the historic town of Southwell. Our aim is to safeguard existing buildings of merit from demolition or neglect whilst celebrating well-designed new buildings and extensions.
Southwell is the smallest cathedral town in England. The centre of the town is largely Georgian in character although a number of the buildings are much older. There are 243 listed properties in the town including the Minster and the medieval Archbishop's Palace which are Grade 1, and the medieval Saracen's Head and Vicars' Court which are Grade 2*.

Southwell Civic Society was formed in 1971 to resist growing pressure to radically alter the town. The Society is an independent, non-political, voluntary Charitable Incorporated Organisation which works to protect the built and natural environment.
The Society is committed to stimulating public interest in the built environment within the town and the surrounding countryside.
