The Civic Society is entitled to be consulted on planning matters relating to Southwell including the Newark & Sherwood Local Plan, Policy Documents, Planning Applications and Appeals. We are particularly concerned in balancing the requirement to protect our many Listed Buildings and the Conservation Area whilst acknowledging the changing needs of residents, those seeking affordable housing, and the many visitors to the town. With the growth in traffic road safety issues are taking an increasing profile, as are the dangers of light pollution and the effects of proposals on the countryside.
The Southwell Civic Society Planning Committee meets every two or three weeks or so, depending on the number of planning applications for Southwell Parish lodged with the Newark and Sherwood District Council. When returning our consultations to the District Council we try to give useful and constructive criticism, as well as deciding whether to support or object to proposals contained in each application. The majority of the proposals in the applications we find we can support and it is only, perhaps, around 20% of applications that we find valid reasons to object.
Because so many applications are being lodged with the Newark and Sherwood District Council, the major and more important planning applications are being made by the District Councillors at the Council’s Planning Committee Meeting but the remainder are being decided by the Planning Officers themselves under delegated powers.
